Aliyah on the Agenda...

To meet the renewed interest in aliyah from our Conservative Jewish community and to effectively promote the message, the Conservative Movement, under the aegis of MERCAZ USA, has reconvened the Aliyah Committee. Under the leadership of its Chair, Elana Gershen Finkelstein, and with representatives from the various arms of our Movement, the Aliyah Committee's goal is to strengthen the connection with Israel and increase awareness about the realities of aliyah.

To that end, the Aliyah Committee has taken a number of iniatives over the past couple of years. In 2003, it co-sponsored with MERCAZ USA a Yom Iyun on "The Place of Zionism in the Conservative Movement" and participated, along with MERCAZ, the Jewish Agency, the Israel Aliyah Center and Project Reconnect, in a series of "Masorti Aliyah Promotion Speaking Tours". These short-term shlichuyot bring former Americans who are now involved with the Masorti Movement back to the United States to speak on behalf of Israel and aliyah. To date, three such short-term "shlichuyot" have taken place. Two more aliyah-promotion speaking tour are planned during the course of the November Is Link To Israel Month, in the Greater Boston area and the Great Lakes Region.

The Aliyah Committee is committed to working with the various arms of the Conservative Movement to focus attention on aliyah from within our Movement. If you are interested in being involved with activities of the Aliyah Committee, please contact Elana Gershen Finkelstein at 212-533-7800, ext. 2020 or email aliyah@mercazusa.org.
